The African National Congress urges all 93 145 registered voters in the 15 wards to be contested in the by-elections on Wednesday, 09 November 2016, to come out in their overwhelming numbers to cast their votes.
15 wards will be contested throughout the country comprised of 6 wards in the Eastern Cape, 3 in KwaZulu-Natal, 2 in Limpopo, 2 in Mpumalanga, 1 in Northern Cape, and 1 in the Western Cape.
These by-elections are the first to be held following the 3rd August 2016 Local Government Elections which had a low-voter turn out in areas that previously supported the ANC, in particular. The ANC characterised the results of the election as an unambiguous clarion call by the people to the ANC for unity and accelerated progress. The ANC has listened to the voices of the people and recommitted ourselves to deal with the greatest challenges facing our people – acting faster to create jobs, fighting crime and dealing decisively with corruption.
Whilst we are confident that the ANC will retain all wards previously held by the people’s movement, we trust that the people will vote for the ANC overwhelmingly and ensure victory in wards which were not previously held by the people’s political home, the ANC.
Like many before them, these elections are about accelerating the pace of service delivery in the pursuance of a South Africa that is free of poverty, unemployment and inequality.
The ANC urges all eligible voters to check and update their details at their local IEC offices during office hours in order to avoid unnecessary confusion on Voting Day. About 80 voting districts are expected to open at 07:00 AM and close 09:00 PM on Wednesday, 09 November 2016.
