Issued by the Office of the ANC Provincial Secretary on 18 December 2015
We have learnt with deep shock that our OR Tambo Regional Chairperson, Xolile Nkompela, escaped an attempt to kill him when two gun-totting men opened fire on his motor vehicle late yesterday evening.
We are saddened more by the fact that the Police didn’t act on the information about a plot to assassinate Comrade Nkompela when it was given to them.
We call on the national police leadership from the national police commissioner, head of hawks, provincial police commissioner to act on the information they have about this plot.
Had they acted on this by following up the leads given to them, this could not have happened. And we urge them to do their jobs. Police cant fold their arms when they receive information about a plot to kill other people.
As the ANC we worried that these assassination plots against Comrades continue being planned. We call on the police to protect our Comrades, to protect the people of this province from crime of any kind.
We have protested to the provincial police services about their non-action on this matter. Police have a duty to act of information they receive about a planned act of criminality.
Police failure to act on the information received is abdicating from their responsibilities and South Africans, including members of the ANC like Cde Nkompela, don’t deserve such poor policing.
We will not be shaken by people who want to kill us. We will not surrender the ANC to thugs who want positions and resources for personal gain. The police must wake up to reality and stop this criminality.
Ends…
