The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape is appalled and outraged at the brutal killing of seven (7)family members at a homestead at Tantseka Location, Sithebe Administrative Area ( Bityi) in Mthatha on Wednesday night ,16th November 2022.
It is reported that three armed unknown men forced their way into the family home and opened fire killing six family members and one succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital. The family was in mourning after the passing of their relative, Novotile Mgxada (62), who was fatally shot last week.
The extent of violence now plaguing our communities shows that there are many illegal firearms in the hands of criminals.
We are deeply disturbed and troubled by the increasing number of senseless killings of innocent citizens. Criminals cannot hold our people at ransom in this manner.
We can’t accept this situation, enough is enough. Police must shape up and be visible in all our communities and crime intelligence must be beefed up. Crime intelligence plays a critical role in crime and threats and must be effective in gathering intelligence working in collaboration with our communities.
Crime statistics have proven that Gqebera and Kariega ( Nelson Mandela Bay), Qumbu, Mthatha, Engcobo , Willowvale, Qonce and East London (Buffalo City Metro) are hotspots wherein we have seen brutal killings of many innocent citizens.
We appeal to the community members to come forward with any information in their possession that could assist in the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for this heinous and barbaric act. We call on law enforcement agencies to arrest and prosecute these heartless killers .
We send our sincere heartfelt condolences to the Mkangeli, Fukuzana, Mgxada families , relatives and the Bityi community at large.
May their souls rest in eternal peace.
