ANC Provincial Chairperson and Premier, Comrade Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane accompanied by MEC of COGTA, Comrade Xolile Nqatha, MEC of Human Settlements, Comrade Nonceba Kontsiwe, Buffalo City Metro Executive Mayor, Comrade Xola Pakati and BCM councillors today visited the affected areas at Duncan Village and Mdantsane to conduct an assessment of the damage caused by yesterday’s (Saturday, 8 January 2022) floods. Many of our citizens have had their homes and valuable belongings washed away and destroyed by floods.

Our hearts go out to the affected families who have lost their loved ones in the floods. We also convey our heartfelt condolences to the family of Captain Pierre Marx from the East London’s K9 Search and Rescue division who died in the line of duty during the heavy floods on Saturday in East London whilst saving one drowned citizen.

We are satisfied that provision of food relief, clothes, blankets and alternative accommodation has been coordinated by both Premier Mabuyane and Executive Mayor Pakati. Premier Mabuyane has assured the ANC that continuous support and counselling to affected families is ensured especially those who have lost their loved ones. We strongly appeal to the Provincial government to access the national disaster fund from National government to assist the flood victims.

We thank the disaster management teams both from the Provincial government and Buffalo City Metro as well as non-governmental relief organizations who
have shown exemplary acts of compassion and care to the victims and affected families in providing assistance and support, both moral and material.
