It is with a profound sense of loss that the African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape received the news that Comrade Mbuyiseli “Mbuyi” Mpengu passed away yesterday, Sunday 4th December 2022 at his house in eQonce.
Affectionately known as “Sodolophu”
Comrade Mbuyi grew up within the ranks of our Congress Movement and formed part of SCO at University of Fort Hare (Alice Campus). He was shaped by the circumstances of his vocation as a student and youth activist. Undergraduate with Public Administration at University of Fort Hare, he further acquired Honours degree in Public Administration. Mbuyi continued his academic journey and graduated in Master of Public Administration, Nelson Mandela University .
Comrade Mbuyi distinguished himself as the type of competent and ethical public servant that our country sorely desires to accomplish its developmental agenda and transformative vision where amongst many duties, he served as Parliamentary Liaison at Economic Affairs, Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform, Officer Premier and later appointed as Deputy Director in the Premiers office. He was transferred to the Office of the Head Of Department, Public Works.
He was recently appointed as a Director in the Office of the HOD . Mbuyi also served as Deputy Director (Public Works ), Director responsible for Intergovernmental Relations – Public Works and at the time of his untimely passing he was the Director for EPWP at Department of Public Works and Infrastructure.
Mbuyi was an embodiment of this upright social standing. He endeared himself to many people for his humility as well as for his outstanding abilities as a civil servant of a special type.
It was this character of selflessness that saw him lead the ANCYL at Ekwalini Location in eQonce as a Branch Secretary and in the Dr WB Rubusana Region as its Regional Secretary. Comrade Mbuyi’s commitment and leadership abilities were evident, and in recognition of these he was elected onto the Eastern Cape Provincial Executive Committee of the ANCYL.
Throughout his political life, both when he was in positions of leadership, but especially also when he had no positions of leadership, Comrade Mbuyi remained a fiercely loyal and uncompromising member of the African National Congress forming part of the elections campaigns as a volunteer.
By any standard, his exemplary loyalty to the African National Congress is recorded in the annals of history and impossible to erase. He had a deep understanding of what it means to truly serve the masses of our people and this a legacy he leaves behind.
Comrade Mbuyi will forever be remembered as a gentle soul and a fearless fighter. His contribution to the struggles of youth and South Africans in general for economic freedom will never be forgotten.
The ANC in the Eastern Cape conveys its sincere condolences to the entire family of Comrade Mbuyi Mpengu, relatives, friends and colleagues in the public service.
