The African National Congress(ANC)in the Eastern Cape is astounded by the male dominated Mayoral Committee announced by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality Executive Mayor ,Retief Odendaal .
The decision by Retief Odendaal is bent on reversing the gains that women of our country have made and entrench patriarchal tendencies and also an indictment to the transformation agenda of our country .
It must sink to the DA and Retief that one of the most significant features of our country’s Constitution is that the right to equality is held to be the cornerstone of the Constitution. We have a Constitution that entrenches equality, and yet we still have attitudes, beliefs, myths and practices that inhibit the freedom and emancipation of women by the likes of Odendaal and his ilk.
We would not allow this important gain to be reversed anywhere in our country and we will mobilize our structures to oppose these backward appointments, and we make a strong call to all political parties represented in Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality to join progressive forces to break the cycle of gender exclusion.
