The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has learnt with a deepid sense of sadness on the passingo away of Sisi Nyameka Goniwe, widow to the late struggle icon, Mathew Goniwe and Speaker of Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality.
We lower our revolutionary banner in honour of this extraordinary leader and cadre of our Congress Movement. A political activist in her own right , she fought to ensure that women were an integral part of the liberation struggle and should assume their rightful place in society.
Sisi Nyameka was elected as the first woman Mayor of Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality in 2011. In a lifetime dedicated to the achievement of South Africa`s liberation, Sisi Nyameka demonstrated fortitude in the face of adversity and responded selflessly to the sacrifices demanded of her and her family.
While the family has lost a mother, the ANC and the country have lost an irreplaceable leader, a role model and a constant reminder of dedication and selflessness. Sisi Nyameka embodied grace and humility.
Our dear mother and Comrade is gone, but she will never be forgotten. We have no doubt that she is now in the company of great revolutionaries like Fatima Meer, Charlotte Maxeka, Noninzi Luzipho, Lillian Ngoyi , Florence Matomela, Albertina Sisulu, Mamu Mabhala, Winnie Madikizela- Mandela and many others. She is probably giving them a detailed account on the continuing struggle against patriarchy and improving the living conditions of women in South Africa.
We send our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the Goniwe family, friends, relatives, colleagues in the Inxuba Yethemba Municipality and the African National Congress in the Chris Hani Region.
