ANC EC statement on the passing away of Bhuti Zola Skweyiya

The ANC in the Eastern Cape has received the news of death of Bhuti Zola Skweyiya, the former Minister of Public Service and Administration from 1994 -1997, Social Development from 1999 – 2009, South African High Commissioner to United Kingdom from 2009 – 2014 and ANC NEC member with a sense of great loss and sadness.

Cde Skweyiya was involved in the drafting of the Harare Declaration in 1989, an ANC document which articulated its proposals for a political settlement and for negotiations aimed at resolving the intractable South African conflict. The document received international acceptance by the Ad-Hoc Committee on Southern Africa of the Organisation of African Unity (AOU) the Non Aligned Movement (NAM), the Frontline States and (with some modification) the General Assembly of the United Nations.

The heart of a lion of South Africa’s liberation struggle has ceased to beat. It is a heart which beat in unison, through many of the most difficult years of the struggle against apartheid with the wishes and aspiration of our people.

Cde Zola Skweyiya was a South African who demonstrated throughout his life a profound commitment to the liberation of the people of this country and the African continent.

As South Africans join together to work for a better country, we should seek to emulate the values of service, discipline and commitment which Bhuti Zola Skweyiya embodied throughout his life.

Comrade Skweyiya has joined the long and honoured ranks of the many heroes and heroines who gave their lives to our struggle.

Hi death has not only taken from us a leader and fellow cadre in the struggle to build a better country, but an internationalist. He passed away at a time when his experience as leader, his abilities and foresight were still needed to advance the process of building a better South Africa. His contribution to this cause has been immense and his legacy will be maintained by our furthering the ideals for which he fought.

The people of South Africa and the ANC can never forget this man who once walked the surface of this earth and put so much into seeking justice and peace for all who lived in it. We call on all South Africans to bow in honour of this great son of Africa.

Hamba Kahle Qhawe lama Qhawe.
