The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has learnt with shock and sadness on the passing away of Head of Department (HOD) in the Province Dept of Education, Comrade Themba Kojana early this morning in hospital after a short illness.
Comrade Kojana answered the call of the liberation struggle of his time, against the discrimination that pervaded the textures of life for people of colour in apartheid South Africa.
He was very passionate yet humble about his contribution to the struggles of the working class and the poor when he served the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) . His contribution to the transformation of our society at economic, social and political level will forever be etched in our minds.
Comrade Kojana holds a BA degree from Vista University and BEd Honours from the University of Free State. His other qualifications include a certificate in Education Leadership Course, certificate in Introduction to Economics for Unionist and a certificate in Adventure Leader course.
He previously led as Deputy Director-General: Teacher and Professional Development in the Department of Basic Education responsible for the promotion of quality teaching and institutional performance through the effective supply, development and utilisation of human resources. He was Chief Director in the Department of Basic Education responsible for Mobilisation and Partnerships in Education. In May 2007, he was the Director: Rural Education responsible for developing a comprehensive plan for improving the quality of education in rural areas. From January 2006 to May 2008, he served as Director for School Safety and Enrichment.
His rare qualities earned him tremendous respect among his peer in government.
Kojana’s selflessness and unwavering commitment to the education of a black child is discernable in the various positions he held with distinction in government.
The entire Provincial leadership of the ANC and the Alliance sends its heartfelt condolences to the Kojana family, relatives, friends and colleagues at Department of Education. May peace which comes from the memories of love shared, comfort them in the days ahead, and the comfort of God help the family during this difficult time.
We dip our banners in honour of this special cadre and tecnocrat of our democratic state.
May his soul rest in peace.
