The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape Province has learnt with great sense of loss and sadness on the untimely passing of Cde Mzwandile Tantsi from Cradock in Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality. Comrade Tantsi was fondly called Ta Zwai by his peers, the young, and the old alike.
Cde Tantsi passed on in his sleep in the morning of Sunday, 7 March 2021, a mere seven weeks after the passing of his dear wife, Comrade Nopo Tantsi, who was an activist of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU).
Cde Ta Zwai is a long standing member and leader of the African National Congress and the South African Communist Party. He came through the ranks of student activism through Black Students Movement and SANSCO from the Rhodes University where he graduated with a BSc degree in Bio-Chemistry. He worked as an outstanding teacher of Maths and Science at J.A. Calata Secondary School in Cradock.
Cde Ta Zwai served as the Chairperson of the then Cradock ANC Branch until the introduction of ward based branches. The movement deployed him to serve as the Mayor of the then Cradock Local Municipality from the year 2000 until 2005 after which he was deployed as the Municipal Manager of the same municipality where he worked with three Mayors until 2017.
The ANC sends its most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Tantsi family, relatives, and the community of Cradock on the sad loss of this disciplined cadre of the movement. May his humble and revolutionary soul rest in eternal peace.
Cde Ta Zwai Tantsi will be laid to rest in Cradock on Friday, 12 March 2021. The local structures of the movement will be hosting a memorial service to honour him on Thursday, 11 March 2021 at 13h00 in Lingelihle Community Hall, Cradock. Both the memorial and funeral services will adhere to the strict Covid-19 protocols. The services will also be broadcasted in social media platforms.
