The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape welcomes the Grahamstown High Court judgement on the defamation case brought by ANC PWC member and MEC of Transport, Safety & Liaison, Comrade Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe against Mr Lungile Mxube.
Mr Mxube has been ordered by the High Court to publish an unconditional apology to Cde Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe in the same platform he used to defame her, as well as in the Daily Dispatch newspaper.
The judgement is a good example to remind all citizens of an obligation to exercise freedom speech and expression without resorting to personal attacks and insults. We want to reiterate the point that there is no justification for the parading of lies and untruths in the public discourse.
We also make a call to all ANC members to
use social media platforms to advance debates and discussions in a rational and responsible manner at all material times and that must be in line with the ANC Constitution and Code of Conduct.
