The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape welcomes the appointment of Mrs Nwabisa Makunga as Editor of Herald and its sister publication , Weekend Post respectively.
Makunga has been an “exemplary journalist” and her career had been characterised by an “unerring capacity for objectivity”.
The appointment of Mrs Makunga is the re-affirmation of our call for the much-needed transformation in South Africa’s newsrooms, particularly the affirmation of black female journalists.
This ground-breaking development must improve Herald and Weekend Post quality of reporting – journalism that is driven by a culture of innovation and underpinned by accuracy, accountability and the trust of readers who consume what is published by the newspapers.
A skilled and competent black female journalist must be appointed to be second in command of these two newspapers that have very few black female executives.
