COSATU in the Eastern Cape is greatly shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of a former trade unionist, ANC veteran and community builder Comrade Government Zini.
Let us convey our sincere deepest condolences and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, comrades, ANC and all its structures.
Comrade Zini was an Organizing Secretary of Motor Assembly and Components Workers Union of South Africa (MACWUSA). He was part of the leadership comprising of among other comrades Dennis Neer, Duma Makanda and Thobile Mhlahlo (the latter 2 comrades are late). In 1980 Bra Gov led a historic 3 months strike at Ford Motor Company, Struandale in PE.
MACWUSA is among the unions that rejected the Wiehahn Commission recommendations on trade unions that were later made a law. MACWUSA totally refused to register with the Nationalist Party Government Department of Labour. MACWUSA believed that there was no separation between workplace struggle and the struggle for total liberation of the oppressed and exploited masses.
It is for that reason that Comrade Zini featured prominently in activities of PEBCO under the leadership of Comrade Thozamile Botha. Bra Gov was among leaders who worked towards the formation of United Democratic Front (UDF).
Comrade ZIni participated meaningfully as MACWUSA representative in the unity
talks that led to the formation of COSATU. MACWUSA can be traced to those unions
that came together towards the formation of NUMSA. Bra Gov was at the forefront of many struggles that included the Consumer Boycott and Opposition to Piet Koornhof Bill (Tri-cameral Parliament and Bantu Councils).
As we celebrate May Day, we are reminded of the contribution of Bra Gov and others like him who selflessly gave to the movement their all in pursuance of our freedom.
May his dear soul rest in eternal peace.
Long live the undying spirit of Bra Gov!
