ANC EASTERN CAPE STATEMENT ON THE PROTESTS IN KOMANI

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has once again noted the continued protests in Komani .

While we know that communities have genuine concerns regarding to service delivery , but blocking of roads, denying businesses to trade and destruction of public property cannot be condoned. We strongly call on all our structures , supporters and communities to remain calm and exercise patience and tolerance.

The ANC in the Province has established a team led by PEC deployees to Chris Hani Region , MEC of COGTA, Cde Zolile Williams , Chris Hani District Municipality Executive Mayor,Cde Wongama Gela and Enoch Mgijima Executive Mayor , Cde Madoda Papiyane to urgently meet with the leaders of the protesters and address community concerns.

In line with the commitments we made in the 2021 Election Manifesto, the ANC wishes to reiterate that it is not impervious to genuine community concerns.

We reiterate the commitment we made in intervening to challenges of service delivery when we met all Executive Mayors and Mayors of all the different municipalities last Monday , 23 January 2023 at East London ICC , wherein we called on Department of COGTA and Provincial Treasury to urgently create necessary tools to assist municipalities expenditure patterns . Part of our resolutions is for municipalities to develop project planning and implementation tracking mechanisms to monitor planning, expenditure trends and project delivery against set time frames. Most importantly all ANC-led municipalities to ring-fence money for the maintenance of infrastructure and prioritise within their budgets by ensuring the fixing of roads, potholes, sewage spillages and broken water pipes.

We want to ensure the citizens of Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality that genuine service delivery concerns are receiving urgent attention at the Provincial Executive level and Executive Mayor , Cde Madoda Papiyane has committed working with his collective to respond to issues affecting Komani residents.

We have always listened to our people and will always respond in a manner that continues to better the lives of our communities.

END….
