ANC EC ON N9 OUTSIDE GRAAFF-REINET ACCIDENT

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has learnt with a deep sense of shock and sadness at the tragic crash that claimed the lives of 14 people on the N9 outside Graaff-Reinet around 05h30 this morning. A minibus taxi with 15 passengers travelling from Western Cape collided with a Mazda CX5 SUV with six passengers .All six passengers of the SUV died on the scene, along with 8 passengers from the minibus taxi.

We are deeply saddened that so many people lost their lives in this horrific crash and we send our heartfelt condolences to the families and the loved ones of those who perished and wish those injured speedy recovery.

It is a sad day for South Africa, and a chilling reminder that despite the best efforts of our road traffic enforcement authorities, the numbers of lives lost to accidents on our roads remains worryingly high.

Road safety remains our collective responsibility and every road user must play their part in ensuring that our roads are safe. Law enforcement officers must continue to do their best in ensuring that transgressors of the rules of the road are brought to book and where necessary taken off our roads.

We call upon all road users to be vigilant on the road at all times and motorists to observe the rules of the road and ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy at all times.

We call on the Road Traffic Management Corporation to investigate the crash and establish the root cause of this tragic incident.
