The African National Congress ( ANC) in the Eastern Cape is outraged, dismayed and disgusted at the images and videos circulating on social media platforms showing the merciless beating of a helpless elderly woman at Sholorwa Village , eXhora in the Amathole District.
In a video that has gone viral an elderly woman is seen being brutally beaten by a man identified as Nkosi Ngubesilo Njuqwana from Ward 15, Sholora Village eXhora.
We are also shocked that nobody came to the assistance of a powerless and helpless elderly woman who was being assaulted even whilst lying on the ground except for another woman who came to her rescue and was also assaulted by the very same heartless traditional leader.
What was also abhorrent was lack of action by some men who were giggling and witnessed the incident , to either stop the beating or apprehend the perpetrator of this heinous crime. The beating clearly shows we are a society that has normalized violence against the most vulnerable people of our society in this case a defenseless elderly woman.
We call upon the South African Police Services (SAPS) to act without fear or favor and speedily arrest the perpetrator of this cruel act and face the full might of the law. Violence against women must not be tolerated in any society .
As a nation we must unambiguously affirm the rights of women to safety, freedom, justice and equality and send a clear message that as a country , we are united and resolute in our commitment to mercilessly fight this heinous pandemic against our women. Achieving this vision requires 365 days of action against violence against women and amongst others, societal leaders that lead by example.
Women’s rights are human rights.
