The African National Congress ( ANC) in the Eastern Cape strongly condemns the barbaric killing of Mama Nogcinile Mtirara last night at Mqhekezweni Great Place in Mthatha, the tragic killing of the 85 year-old businesswoman , Mama Manase at Keiskamahoek over the weekend and brutal rape of five (5) grade 12 learners of Jongintaba Secondary School also at Mqhekezweni Village last night.
The loss of Mama Nogcinile Mtirara, Mama Manase and brutal rape of five school learners is a stark reminder of the pressing need to address gender-based violence and to foster a culture of respect, equality and safety for all in our communities and call on law enforcement agencies to
activate 72 hours action plan to arrest these criminals.
Our society cannot and will not tolerate such atrocities any longer. We stand united against these acts of violence and collectively strive for an environment where everyone, irrespective of gender, can live without fear.
Understanding the gravity of the situation, MEC Bukiwe Fanta has dispatched a team of social workers to provide psycho-social support to the families and help them navigate through this traumatic experience and find some semblance of healing and Department of Basic Education in the Province has provided support to the learners.
We demand nothing less than a rigorous pursuit of justice in this case. Those heartless criminals responsible for this heinous , gutless and wicked acts must be brought to justice and the full force of the law should deal decisively with them.
We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved Mtirara and Manase family and to the many families in the province affected by these senseless killings.
