Based on the initial stages of the investigation, Arrive Alive and Dept of Transport in KZN wish to report the following:-

  1. A taxi affiliated to UNcedo Taxi Association was travelling from Qumbu in the Eastern Cape to Johannesburg;
  2. There were 18 passengers, including the driver;
  3. A total of 17 people perished on the scene of the accident, not 18 as initially reported.
  4. Only one (1) person survived.
  5. The details of the deceased are as follows:-
    a. Adults males: 7
    b. Adult females: 3
    c. Minors – boys: 3
    d. Minors – girls: 4
    e. Only surviving passenger – is a girl child.

We are deeply saddened that so many people lost their lives in this horrific crash and we send our heartfelt condolences to the families and the loved ones of those who perished and wish the girl child speedy recover.

This trend of massive crashes robs families and our country of young men and women who are playing an important role in the social welfare of their families and the country at large and we cannot continue on this trajectory of counting bodies on our roads daily.

We appeal to the Minister of Transport to enlist the services of the Road Accident Fund (RAF) and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to give the families of the deceased and the injured the necessary support and comfort.

ENDS….
