The African National Congress ( ANC) in the Eastern Cape has learnt with sadness and sorrow on the passing of Professor Mkhuseli Kenneth Mashiyi,a remarkable Specialist Physician , Founder and Visionary behind Herolim Private Hospital in Mthatha.
Professor Mashiyi’s passing comes at a time when the country’s healthcare system is on the brink of a positive overhaul through the implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI). He provided valuable guidance to the private healthcare industry on its role within the national health system. Professor Mashiyi had a deep understanding of the politics of healthcare and the needs of healthcare professionals.
We the citizens of the Eastern Cape Province have lost a valuable asset, a medic and a man of people. We pride ourselves in his soft-spokenness, simplicity and humility.
Professor Mashiyi was a rare individual, who remained a core member of society without demonstrating any false graces, but sought to align his training and expertise with the needs of his fellow human beings. Here was a man whose professional life bears testimony to the Hippocratic Oath which urges medical practitioners to act to the best of their abilities to prevent diseases and care for patients irrespective of race or class.
We will always remember him as the distinguished South African who loved this country more than anything else. We thank the Mashiyi family for allowing him the space to serve his country and his people.
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful life so well lived with all of us.
Our hearts go out to the Mashiyi family , relatives , friends and colleagues in the medical fraternity during this difficult period.
