The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape is saddened by the unexpected and violent passing of Comrade Wonele Gontshi , a member of the Branch Executive Committee (BEC) of General Maqutyana Branch (Ward 14) and Branch Elections Team Coordinator, who got shot as he arrived at a pharmacy kuQumbu yesterday, Saturday 13 June 2026.
He was shot together with Comrade Ngawonke Bulala , the Elections
Manager of the Mhlontlo Local Elections Team who was seriously injured and is currently at an undisclosed hospital and both comrades were attacked by individuals whose identity is still not known.
Comrade Wonele’s tragic passing has robbed us of a valuable activist who
made sterling contributions in the organisational life of the ANC in Mhlontlo Sub- Region . He was a fearless and indomitable lion who grew up from the ranks of our youth structures.
We strongly call for the 72 hour Activation Plan that includes a multidisciplinary team of Hawks investigators and forensics to track down those heartless criminals. We further request for the deployment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) to investigate this heinous crime and also pleading with the community to assist police officers with any information regarding the identity of the perpetrators.
We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues and friends and wish speedy recovery to Comrade Ngawonke Bulala.
