The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape condemns the circulation on social media platforms of a list named “EC nomination consolidation” bearing the names of individuals to be earmarked for nomination for the ANC 55th National Conference.
This peddled fake list is an attempt to create confusion and undermine our organizational democratic processes. It’s the product of the clandestine work of faceless individuals and information peddlers and must be ignored.
The nomination process for NEC and who will be nominated is at the discretion of branches of the ANC and now it is with the Electoral Committee. For the record NEC established the Electoral Committee as resolved by the 54th National Conference to make rules for and manage the selection for leadership positions in the ANC structures. The conference resolution was passed to address weaknesses and manipulation of ANC selection and elections processes, and campaigning rules. The goal was to ensure a process that delivers candidates and leaders with the capacity, integrity and support needed to lead the ANC.
The Elections Committee does not elect or select leaders or candidates. It plays the same role as the IEC in national elections. The election administration is done by an independent agency appointed by the Electoral Committee and accountable to the Electoral Committee. Provincial nominations are consolidated from branch nominations for each Province and used by the Electoral Committee to determine the top three nominees for each National Official position and the top 200 additional member nominees. These names, together with any additional nominees from the Conference floor, will be on the ballot.
At an appropriate time as indicated by the Electoral Committee timelines, all final successful nomination list will be published and emailed to branches.
