ANC EC MOURNS THE PASSING AWAY OF INGQUZA HILL MUNICIPALITY MAYOR

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has learnt with sadness and shock of the passing away of Ingquza Hill Local Municipality Mayor, Comrade Bambezakhe Goya. Comrade Goya passed away last night(Tuesday 12 January 2021) in hospital after a short illness.

Comrade Goya joined the liberation struggle in the late 70’s and became a political activist. He endured the repression of apartheid security police and later was imprisoned for his political activism. His children grew and survived under severe conditions as they were harassed by the apartheid police.

He joined the trade union movement when he worked at Westonaria mine. He was later employed by Transkei Development Coorporation(TDC) as a manager at freight services and later at the Bus Depo where he managed to continue with his political activism transporting comrades outside the country to join the ANC’ military wing, Umkhonto Wesizwe.

ANC deployed Comrade Goya as Ward Councillor of Ward 17,Ingquza Hill Local Municipality in 2006 after he left his businesses he ran at Flagstaff and Lusikisiki. In 2011 he was re- elected as a Proportional Representative (PR) Councillor at Ingquza Hill Local Municipality and also acted as a Mayor in 2012 for a period of 3 months. In 2016 he was re – elected again as a PR Councillor and served as an Executive Committee member- Portfolio Head – Engineering Services. Comrade Goya was elected as Mayor of Ingquza Hill Local Municipality in January 2018 till to date when death robbed us of his life.

Comrade Goya’s passing comes at the time where his guidance and role in turning the fortunes of Ingquza Hill Local Municipality is evident with stability that we have witnessed in that sphere of government.

We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the Goya family, relatives, friends, colleagues and the residents of Ingquza Hill Local Municipality which he served with diligence and care. Comrade Goya leaves behind his wife, children and grandchildren.

May his soul rest in peace.
