The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape mourns the passing of Bishop Mandla “Tshawe” Phakamile Makinana , founder of the Power of God International Church , a dedicated servant of God, a fearless advocate for justice, and a pillar of our movement, uNyawo Zabezolo.
Our glorious movement joins the thousands of our people and peace loving South Africans in mourning the passing of Bishop Makinana , the greatest philanthropist of our province.

Bishop Makinana was part of a proud tradition of faith leaders who recognised that religion in Africa carries a political and moral responsibility and his pastoral work was firmly rooted in the belief that faith must confront injustice, affirm human dignity and stand with those pushed to the margins of society hence he provided shelter to the homeless and his philanthropic work gave support to many destitute families around the province.
His principled stance on justice and human dignity continued to shape young leaders and strengthen the moral fabric of our society. As the ANC, an organisation born in the church and deeply rooted in values of justice and equality, we recognise his immeasurable contribution at a time when our movement is striving to rebuild and restore trust among our people. We will remember him for his great sense of humour and down to earth humility.
His passing leaves our deeply spiritual nation bereft of a remarkable leader whose impressive legacy lives on in the faith of hundreds of thousands of believers within and beyond the church community.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, the congregants of the Power of God International Church , and all who were touched by his life’s work. His legacy will live on in the many lives he transformed and in the ongoing struggle for a just and equal society.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
