The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has learnt with sadness the passing of former PEC member, ANCYL leader and Alfred Nzo District Municipality MMC for Community Development Sercvices , Comrade Momelezi Mbedla.
Comrade Momelezi Mbedla passed on yesterday evening , Thursday , 11 April 2024 after a short illness.
Comrade Mbedla emerged from the ranks
of the youth structures of the Mass Democratic Movement to be amongst notable leaders of the ANCYL and the Congress Movement.
He belonged to the generation of ANCYL leaders who unapologetically infused radical outlook and programmes in the ANC thus making the organization more appealing and relevant to youth aspiration when he served in the structures of the ANC Youth League in the Eastern Cape . He was elected to the leadership of the ANC’s preparatory school as the Regional Deputy Chairperson of the ANC Youth League in Alfred Nzo in 2008. He later served as the Regional Secretary of the ANC Youth League in the old Alfred Nzo Region in 2010 and after the realignment of structures, he was appointed as Regional Coordinator of the Interim Regional Committee (IRC )of the ANC Youth League in 2011. Comrade Mbedla was further appointed to serve in the ANC Alfred Nzo Regional Task Team (RTT) in 2013.
In recognising his leadership qualities, the ANC deployed him as the Executive Mayor of Matatiele Local Municipality in 2013 , again he was re-elected to serve a second term as Executive Mayor in 2016 until November 2021 . He was later redeployed to the Alfred Nzo District Municipality as Portfolio Head of Community Services after the November 2021 local government elections. Despite his tasks and responsibilities being complex, he tackled them with calmness. He always demonstrated the level of political consciousness that was so sacrosanct.
His leadership traits were reaffirmed when he got elected as the Regional Deputy Chairperson of the ANC in Alfred Nzo in 2014 and at the ANC 8th Provincial Conference at ICC in 2017.
He will remain a symbol of youth
activism within the context of building a lasting legacy of freedom, democracy and people centered organization and government. The ANC pays tribute to this extraordinary freedom fighter whose sacrifices and commitment to the liberation of his people remain a source of inspiration to many young cadres of our movement.
The African National Congress in the Eastern Cape convey its heartfelt condolences to the Mbedla family and loved ones.
To his family we say their loss is ours.
Fare-the well Nokhala , Gubevu , Maduna!
May his revolutionary sou rest in eternal peace!
END….
