The African National Congress ( ANC) in the Eastern Cape held a Special Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) meeting on Monday 14 July 2025 to receive an update on the revised Roadmap for Regional Conferences of Alfred Nzo, Nelson Mandela , Dr WB Rubusana , Joe Gqabi and Sarah Baartman Region.
The meeting was also attended by NEC deployees, Comrade Joy Maimela, Comrade Mzwandile Masina , Comrade Mmamoloko Kubayi, Comrade Pinky Kekana and Comrade Bejani Chauke. The meeting was characterized by robust and constructive engagements on organizational and political matters reflective of our revolutionary obligation. It dealt with the political overview presented by the Provincial Chairperson, Comrade Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane which put emphasis on the unity and renewal of our movement.
REVISED ROADMAP TO REGIONAL CONFERENCES :
The Special PEC considered progress
and endorsed the revised roadmap report towards the upcoming Regional Conferences of Alfred Nzo ,Joe Gqabi , Nelson Mandela , Dr WB Rubusana and Sarah Baartman Region.
The Special PEC resolved to appoint anew the existing Regional Task Teams of Alfred Nzo, Joe Gqabi , Nelson Mandela , Dr WB Rubusana and Sarah Baartman Region for a period of 3 months to finalise the work already started of convening Regional Conferences. The decision to appoint the task teams is as a result of the delay in the finalization of disputes from the Provincial Dispute Resolution Committee, National Dispute Resolution Committee and Verification Report from National Organizing .
The Regional Task Teams will fulfill the functions of the REC’s and will be responsible, amongst others, for ensuring that Regional Conferences are held to elect Regional Executive Committees .
Furthermore, the PEC calls on all structures to ensure full compliance with the guidelines relating to BGM’s , BBGM’s and conferences. In line with adopted organizational renewal program, the PEC will channel its activities towards ensuring successful convening of these Regional Conferences. This will ensure that our structures renew their mandate, and all organizational matters are handled by duly elected members.
OR TAMBO AND CHRIS HANI REGIONAL CONFERENCES :
The PEC congratulates the outcome of the regional conferences of OR Tambo and Chris Hani Region held three weeks ago. The PEC is unanimous in its view that the regional conferences have been conducted in accordance with the ANC Constitution.
Furthermore, the PEC is very happy that the outcomes represents the democratic views and wishes of the overwhelming majority of the members of the ANC in these two regions. The elections were free and fair and the debates were robust and frank, in the true traditions of the movement. The two conferences were conducted with high level of discipline and political maturity. The conferences elected new leadership and emerged united. They further adopted high quality resolutions which will rejuvenate the organization and improve policies of the ANC.
ON WARD 11 NGQUSHWA LOCAL MUNICIPALITY & WARD 34 NELSON MANDELA METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY BY-ELECTIONS :
The PEC commends all members including Provincial, Regional , Branch Election Teams and volunteers who are actively on the ground in the by election campaign trails on the two wards.The PEC encourages all structures including deployees in all spheres to intensify their efforts in ensuring a decisive victory for our glorious movement in the two wards.
ON INITIATION DEATHS :
The PEC is deeply distressed by the news of yet more young lives that have been tragically cut short in their prime through botched circumcisions. Reports over the past few have indicated that 8 young men have died . The ANC once again conveys condolences to bereaved families who should be still trying to come to terms with the tragic end of the lives of the deceased at such tender age. We call on our structures and communities to give support to these families . Communities should please report illegal initiation schools to safeguard the circumcision procedure, uphold the integrity of customary initiation and ensure the safety of young initiates. PEC stated that the safety of our young men and boys is not the sole responsibility of government but a societal one. Every parent and guardian must play a part by ensuring that their loved ones return home safely from legal initiation schools.
PEC further applauded Comrade Mabuyane for playing his fatherly role in ensuring that he is part of his two sons who underwent initiation and calls on all fathers to play the same role . PEC calls on all parents to be involved in this process of initiation from the beginning to the end as this will assist to save many promising lives.
CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF PROFESSOR MTUZE:
The PEC joins the nation in mourning the passing of poet, priest and academic, Revd Professor Peter Tshobisa Mtuze. Professor Mtuze was a leading scholar in the field of African languages. He has published more than 30 creative and academic works in varying forms – novels, short stories, poetry, dramas, essays, autobiography, literary guides, translations, cultural and religious published academic papers.Many of Prof Mtuze’s works was that of translating the former President Nelson Mandela’s monumental autobiography Long Walk to Freedom into isiXhosa as Indlela ende eya enkululekweni.
Professor Mtuze’s legacy is monumental and will continue to ripple through our lives. PEC expressed its sincere condolences to the Mtuze family, relatives ,friends and the Anglican Church of Southern Africa . May he rest in eternal peace after his extraordinary, enriched and enriching life.
