ANC EC ON THE OUTCOMES OF THE VIRTUAL EXTENDED PEC MEETING

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape held a virtual Extended Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) meeting on Friday, 19th November 2021.
Members of the PEC , Representatives of the Leagues and of the Alliance Partners (COSATU, SACP & SANCO) attended the meeting and was characterised by frank and robust debates but unity and cohesion guided the discussions.

The Extended PEC meeting was convened to consider and finalise ANC Mayoral, Deputy Mayors and Speakers candidates. The finalization of the candidates is the culmination of an extensive process of interviews and internal democracy which placed at its core renewal, the wishes of our people and structures.

Candidates were considered for the Metropolitan Municipalities (Nelson Mandela & Buffalo City Metro), District Municipalities and local municipalities defined as such on the basis of their history, geo-political location, growth and development trajectory and economic activity amongst others. Other factors included skills, qualifications, gender, youth representation, national question and geographical spread . All the recommended names for Mayors, Deputy Mayors and Speakers will be presented to the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting tomorrow, Sunday 21st November 2021 for consideration.

The process of deployment of TROIKAS in local government is not a function of positions in the constitutional structures. It is neither a function of the position a person holds on a candidate list from Regional Interviewing Panels and Extended PEC meeting. The ultimate objective is to ensure that the best amongst us is bestowed with the responsibility to lead, at whatever level, towards the fulfillment of the mandate from our people.

The PEC is satisfied with the electoral performance of the ANC throughout the Province where voters turned out in large numbers to vote overwhelmingly for the ANC. The ANC has maintained its support among the overwhelming majority in Buffalo City Metro wherein we retained the Metro with 61.1%. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the hundreds of volunteers who reached out to the voters across the length and breath of our Province and ensured that the ANC remains the people’s choice.

From this Extended PEC meeting we have emerged with a renewed mandate to provide decisive and focused leadership to local government sphere.

All the Metropolitan, District and Local Municipalities will meet from Monday 22nd November 2021 to elect Council Speakers and Mayors. The Mayors will subsequently appoint the Members of their Mayoral Committees. The ANC’s gender policy will be adhered in all municipalities governed by the ANC. All our councillors will sign a performance contract that will be binding.

We will continue engagements with political parties to form coalition government in Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, Koukamma and Beyers Naude Municipality. The coalition talks are guided by the principles of ensuring that any coalition government formed benefits our communities to ensure clean governance and service delivery.
