ANC EC SADDENED BY THE PASSING OF FORMER EDUCATION MEC

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape is saddened by the passing away of former Education MEC in the Eastern Cape, Comrade Johnny Ngoako Makgato. Comrade Makgato, aged 73 years had not been well for some time and sadly succumbed to his illness in the early hours of yesterday morning (Wednesday, 6 May 2020).

Popularly know as Oom Johnny , Comrade Makgato sacrificed immensely towards the struggle for the liberation of the African people in our country under the banner of the African National Congress.

Oom Johnny’s political involvement dates back at the University of Fort Hare in the early 70’s but was later expelled from the institution for his political convictions and activism in student struggles. Comrade Johnny Makgato led one of the vibrant ANC branch (New Brighton branch) in 1992 with more than 20000 membership. His leadership collective had the likes of the late Sipho Hina, late Zukile Mtyeku, Tuli Bhobo, Jimmy Tutu, Styles Ngangani, Pat Ndlovu and many political activists. Oom Johnny also served in the ANC Regional Executive Committee (Port Elizabeth Region) as the Deputy Chairperson under the leadership of Comrade Nceba Faku.

Amongst the several responsibilities he was assigned to, Comrade Johnny Makgato was elected as the ANC Member of Provincial Legislature (MPL) from 1994 and later assigned the position of Chairperson of the Finance Standing Committee in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature. In January 2007 he was appointed MEC of Education replacing Comrade Mkhangeli Matomela.He served in the Provincial Legislature till the end of 2009 term.

Comrade Makgato has left an indelible mark through his selfless services to our communities as an activist and former elected public representative. He leaves behind a legacy of collectivism that should be emulated. As we convey our condolences to the Makgato family, we are grateful that his family shared with us their jewel, their humble, unassuming and loving father , a dedicated cadre, a comrade and friend to many who looked up to him for guidance and leadership.

Comrade Johnny Makgato stands among many who carved rich lives in the face of devastating conditions. He found hope within, with an unwavering belief in our humanity and the moral foundations of our liberation struggle. Comrade Johnny’s ’s life was fruitful, significant and abundantly full. His memory will undoubtedly live on.

To Comrade Johnny Makgato’s daughter , Leah , grandchild and his family we say : take solace in the knowledge that your loss is our loss. Robala Ka Khotso Ramaetse, Motau, Mirwa.
