ANC EC STATEMENT ON R61 HEAD ON COLLISION ACCIDENT

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape is gravely saddened by the passing of eleven (11)passengers who perished in a head-on collision involving a minibus taxi and one of the long distance buses. The accident occurred on the R61 between Flagstaff and Lusikisiki at about 13h45 yesterday (Sunday 04 June 2023).

We strongly believe that for our province to see an end to these atrocious episodes, everyone needs to join hands and declare an eternal war on irresponsible driving and road carnage. We are calling on every citizen to take personal interest on road safety and ensure that our roads are not turned into killing fields. Law enforcement officers must continue to do their best in ensuring that transgressors of the rules of the road are brought to book and where necessary taken off our roads.

We call on Department of Health, Department of Social Department , Department of Transport & Community Safety and Road Accident Fund to extend their services to the families of the deceased as well as the survivors of this carnage.

We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident and wish those in hospital a speedy recovery.

END….
