The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape joins the broader community of the Province in mourning the passing of former ANC Joe Gqabi Regional Chairperson and Joe Gqabi District Municipality Executive Mayor, Comrade Zibonele Shoes Dumzela.
Comrade Zibonele Shoes Dumzela passed away yesterday, Saturday 15th January 2022 in hospital after a short illness at the age of 51 years. He was an activist throughout his life at Lady Grey , both in the struggle to end apartheid and, after 1994 in the struggle for a better life for all South Africans.
Comrade Dumzela served the people’s movement with diligence and selflessness. He was elected ANC Joe Gqabi Regional Chairperson in 2012 and was re-elected once again in 2015.
He was a dedicated public representative whose service in various roles and responsibilities in local government spans over two decades, including as Councillor of Lady Grey Transitional Local Council between 1994 and 2000. In 2000 he was elected Mayor of Senqu Local Municipality , a position he held for two terms until he was elected Executive Mayor of Joe Gqabi District Municipality in 2011 and re-elected Executive Mayor of Joe Gqabi District Municipality in 2016 till 2021.
Comrade Dumzela contributed immensely in local government sphere and in all the areas in which he had been deployed in his working life.The governance of the Joe Gqabi District Municipality was sound under his leadership which received many accolades with the Municipality getting clean audit outcomes. Comrade Shoes important contribution to furthering our democracy and his commitment and dedication as a public representative for two decades will never be erased.
We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the Dumzela family, relatives, friends, his former colleagues and comrades at Joe Gqabi District Municipality and everyone whose life he touched. We share your loss and wish you strength during this difficult period.
