The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape welcomes the Grahamstown High Court judgement brought by ANC PEC member and MEC of Transport, Safety & Liaison, Comrade Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe in a defamation case against Mr Lungile Mxube.
The High Court judgement is a victory for constitutional democracy. There is no room for unfounded defamatory statements in our society and the ruling upholds that in strong terms. This judgment affirms that there may be a heavy price to pay – both in legal costs and reputation for irresponsible, defamatory and unconstitutional communication.
We want to reiterate our earlier call that those who continue to peddle malicious and untested allegations on social media platforms must be stopped. Henceforth any individual with knowledge of wrong doing must approach law enforcement agencies. We continue to place our confidence in the appointed Forensic Investigation Team as appointed by the Premier of the Eastern Cape, Comrade Oscar Mabuyane – that it will leave no stones unturned in its investigations of all allegations levelled against Cde Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe . Anyone who may have information must kindly approach the team or approach the courts.
