ANC STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF AMBASSADOR ZINDZI MANDELA

Today, 13th of July 2020, the African National Congress woke up to the sad news of the untimely passing of one of its most revered and outspoken activist Ambassador Zindziswa “Zindzi” Mandela.

She is the daughter of the the late freedom fighters President Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela who dedicated their life’s to the struggle for the liberation of the people of South Africa.

Ambassador Zindzi was propelled into the forefront of the struggle against apartheid from an early age. She became the face of the Mandela family when both her parents where arrested and banished by the Apartheid regime.
She witnessed first-hand the brutality of the apartheid system and its repressive security forces.

Ambassador Zindzi will also be remembered for reading her jailed father President Nelson Mandela’s speech of 1985 at Soweto’s Jabulani Stadium rejecting PW Botha’s conditional offer to release him from prison.

She passed on at a time when the country and the world where preparing to celebrate the “Nelson Mandela International Day” on the 18th of July 2020 albeit under different circumstances owing to COVID 19 conditions.

Ambassador Zindzi’s passing is a huge loss to her own family, the ANC and all it’s Mass Democratic Movement formations as well her big community of friends who came to know her personally.
We honor Ambassador Zindzi for her personal sacrifices in our struggle to liberate and emancipate the rest of South Africa’s people.
Ambassador Zindzi expressed her views without fear or favor and a leader in her own name and right.

The ANC conveys its heartfelt condolences to Ambassador Zindzi Mandela’s children, grandchildren and the the entire family. We wish the family strength and fortitude in their moment of grief and darkness. The whole country and the entire democratic movement have lost a dedicated and loyal servant.
