Issued by the Office of the Provincial Secretary
We welcome the appointment of the former Herald and Weekend Post Politics and Business Editor, Mrs Nwabisa Makunga as the Deputy Editor of the newspaper.
This appointment is in line with the much-needed transformation in South Africa’s newsrooms. For The Herald in particular, it is important that a skilled and competent black female journalist is appointed to be second in command of the newspaper that has very few black managers.
As Mrs Makunga assumes her duties for this position, we appeal to her and newspaper Editor, Brett Horner, Times Media group, to ensure that more black journalists are appointed to management positions in that newsroom.
For the position vacated by Mrs Makunga, we encourage the newspaper and the media group to employ another competent and skilled black journalist who has proper understanding of politics in the country, province and the region guided by fair, neutral approach to news and analysis.
Owing to the role of the region and the province in the country’s economy, we think it would be prudent for the newspaper to separate business from politics in terms of the responsibilities of this editor. Business needs its own editor, who will focus on small businesses as well and not just big monopolies.
We wish Mrs Makunga all the best in her new responsibilities in the newspaper and in serving society.
