The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Skenjana Roji District (Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality) is deeply saddened by the passing of one of its long serving District Executive Committee (DEC) members, Comrade Nomiki Mgezi. Comrade Nomiki Mgezi succumbed to illness on Wednesday, 7 January 2026.
As the South African Communist Party, we convey our heartfelt and revolutionary condolences to her family, particularly her children and grandchildren. We further extend our condolences to the entire liberation movement, which Comrade Mgezi served diligently and selflessly throughout her life. We wish her family strength and resilience during this difficult period and trust that they will find comfort in knowing that they do not grieve alone. As the Cuban revolutionary poet Comrade José Martí once said: “Every true human must feel on their own cheek every blow dealt against the cheek of another.”
The Party has lost one of its most committed servants. Comrade Mgezi’s unwavering dedication to building an active, independent, and campaigning profile of the Party saw her elected to serve in both the District Executive Committee (DEC) and the District Working Committee (DWC) for four successive terms. Throughout her service, her contribution was nothing short of outstanding. As a community developer, she played a pivotal role in reviving and strengthening SACP branches in the Wonder Ndwebisa Sub-District.
Comrade Mgezi was a seasoned activist of the African National Congress (ANC), serving the movement in various capacities, including as a member of the Regional Executive Committee (REC) for two terms. Her exemplary leadership and commitment to the masses led to her deployment by the Alliance as an ANC Ward Councillor, and later as a Proportional Representation (PR) Councillor in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality.
As a Ward Councillor, Comrade Mgezi remained firmly rooted among the people of Duncan Village, living and working alongside the community she served. Unlike many who become detached from the masses once elected, she remained accessible, grounded and deeply passionate about the development and wellbeing of the people of Duncan Village, whom she loved and served with distinction.
The SACP in the district is particularly proud of the outstanding work she undertook during her deployment in the BCMM, especially in her role as Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for Human Settlements. Her contribution in this portfolio was recognised through awards from both Provincial and National Government, reflecting her commitment to service delivery and people-centred development.
The movement is undoubtedly poorer following the loss of this selfless servant of the people. Our movement, and the working-class communities of the metro in particular, are orphaned by the passing of this disciplined and dedicated cadre. Comrade Nomiki Mgezi will always be remembered for her unwavering respect for organisational processes, collective leadership, and democratic decision-making.
In honour of her memory, the SACP Skenjana Roji District commits to intensifying the struggle against corruption, maladministration, and poor service delivery, especially in working-class communities. We shall honour her legacy by renewing our commitment to advancing, deepening and defending the revolutionary content of the National Democratic Revolution.
Comrade Mgezi was a well-rounded cadre whose lifestyle and conduct embodied the values, principles and ethos of our congress movement. In a period that demands thoroughgoing introspection and renewal, she stood as quiet but towering reminder of what genuine renewal should look like.
As we remember her, we are compelled to reflect honestly on the state of our movement and the path ahead. Her example affirms that the reconfiguration of the alliance is not a matter of choice, but an urgent responsibility.
It is within this context that we recommit ourselves to the thoroughgoing renewal of the entire Congress Movement, in order to better serve the people and advance the struggle for socialism.
The details of the memorial and funeral services shall be communicated in due course.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
Issued by the Skenjana Roji District.
