STATEMENT – O.R. TAMBO REC ON THE SAD PASSING OF CDE NGAWONKE BULALA

The O.R. Tambo Regional Executive Committee has learnt with profound sadness of the untimely passing of Comrade Ngawonke Bulala, a committed cadre of the movement, a professional, and a leader who dedicated himself to the service of his organisation and community.

Comrade Ngawonke cut his political teeth in the student movement, where he joined the South African Students Congress (SASCO) at the then Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, now Nelson Mandela University. His commitment to student activism saw him rise beyond ordinary membership to serve as the Chairperson of the SASCO branch, demonstrating his leadership qualities from an early stage.

Upon returning to his Sub-region of birth, Comrade Ngawonke continued his commitment to the development of young people. He led the “Inspire” programme, which assisted matric learners with applications to institutions of higher learning, helping young people navigate opportunities for further education. He also served as part of the Local South African Youth Council structure in the Kumkani Mhlontlo Sub-region.

His contribution to youth and organisational work continued beyond the university. Comrade Ngawonke served as part of the Provincial Conference Preparatory Committee of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in the Eastern Cape in 2020, contributing to the organisational processes of the movement at a critical period.

Comrade Ngawonke subsequently served the African National Congress Youth League in General Maqutyana Branch, where he held the position of Branch Secretary. At the time of his passing, Comrade Ngawonke was serving as the Branch Secretary of General Maqutyana Branch in Ward 14, Kumkani Mhlontlo Sub-region. He was also the ANC Ward Councillor Candidate for Ward 14 in the upcoming Local Government Elections.

In honour of his contribution and commitment to the organisation and the community he served, we call upon the people of Ward 14, including voters, supporters and members, to participate in the democratic process on 4 November 2026 and cast their votes for the ANC. His legacy of service to the community should remain a source of inspiration to all those who knew him.

Recognising his organisational commitment and leadership capabilities, he was also entrusted with the responsibility of serving as the LET Elections Manager in Kumkani Mhlontlo.

Comrade Ngawonke’s contribution extended beyond politics. He was a qualified and registered pharmacist, and at one point served as a pharmacy manager. In his continued pursuit of knowledge and professional development, he was furthering his studies towards an LLB degree at Walter Sisulu University (iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu) at the time of his passing.

His life represents the contribution of a young professional who understood that education, professional excellence, community service and political activism can be complementary instruments in the advancement of society.

The circumstances surrounding Comrade Ngawonke’s death are a painful reminder of the scourge of violent crime that continues to affect communities across the O.R. Tambo Region. The Regional Executive Committee expresses its deep concern about the loss of life through violence and calls for concerted efforts by all stakeholders to address crime and restore safety in our communities.

We call for the silencing of the guns in the O.R. Tambo Region. No family should have to lose a loved one to senseless violence, and no community should have to live in fear.

The O.R. Tambo Regional Executive Committee extends its deepest condolences to the Bulala family, Comrade Ngawonke’s relatives, comrades, friends, colleagues and all those who knew and worked alongside him. We share in their grief during this difficult period.

May his contribution to the movement, his profession and his community be remembered with honour.

Hamba Kahle, Comrade Ngawonke Bulala. Hamba Kahle Nxasana

May your revolutionary soul rest in peace.
