STATEMENT ON THE BY-ELECTIONS TO BE HELD IN NOVEMBER 2020

The African National Congress (ANC) is looking forward to the by-elections that will be held in 96 wards on 11 November 2020. These by-elections were postponed due to Covid-19.

Voter registration will be held this weekend, 3-4 October 2020. We urge all voters to check their details on the voters’ roll by sending their ID number via sms to 32810. New voters, or those who changed their addresses, should go to the voting stations on Saturday or Sunday with an ID document and a mask.

ANC structures and members will be on the ground this weekend in the 96 affected wards to encourage and assist voters to register or confirm their registration.

The Independent Electorsl Commissio (IEC) has put plans in place to guarantee voters’ safety for both registration and election days.

The ANC will start its candidate selection process that involves nomination by ANC branches and a community consultation meeting on the candidates. The aim of this process is to allow the community to guide the ANC on selecting the best candidates. All our candidates must enjoy the overwhelming support of communities they come from.

Local government is responsible for delivering basic services to our people. We need to make sure we elect councillors who are able to represent the people and willing to work tirelessly to meet their needs.

The ANC calls on all its members and supporters to check their registration on 3-4 October 2020, participate in selecting the best ANC ward councillors, and vote on 11 November in all the by-elections.
