The African National Congress (ANC) in the O. R. Tambo Region has noted the appearance before court of the Executive Mayor of King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality, together with a number of municipal officials, on charges relating to alleged fraud and corruption.
Following these developments, the Regional Executive Committee Officials and the Regional Working Committee (RWC) convened to consider the matter and have further engaged with the leadership of the African National Congress at national level to ensure that the organisation responds in a manner that is consistent with its constitutional obligations, organisational policies, and the Integrity Commission guidelines.
The Regional Executive Committee (REC) further notes that the Executive Mayor has voluntarily submitted a written request to recuse himself from the execution of his responsibilities as Executive Mayor pending the finalisation of the legal process.
The ANC acknowledges this decision as a demonstration of respect for the organisation, the rule of law, and the integrity of public institutions. In line with the ANC’s organisational renewal programme and the movement’s Step-Aside Guidelines, the REC has resolved that the Step-Aside Policy shall be implemented with immediate effect, pending the conclusion of the legal proceedings.
The REC reiterates that this decision should not be construed as a pronouncement on the guilt or innocence of any individual. The affected comrades remain entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a court of law. At the same time, the ANC remains steadfast in its commitment to ethical leadership, accountability, clean governance, and the fight against corruption in all its forms.
The Regional Executive Committee remains seized with this matter and will continue to assess all developments in consultation with the National leadership of the ANC. The organisation will, at the appropriate time, pronounce on any further organisational and political interventions necessary to safeguard good governance, public confidence, and the integrity of the movement.
The ANC wishes to assure the people of the O. R. Tambo Region, King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality in particular that the provision of municipal services must continue without disruption and that the organisation remains committed to clean, accountable and ethical governance.
