The African National Congress in the Eastern Cape welcomes the release of results of the by-elections held in three wards in the Province yesterday, 6 June 2018.
We would like to take this opportunity and congratulate the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for, once again, delivering the credible, free and fair elections, in which we can all have confidence in.
The ANC appreciates the support it received in a number of wards it retained. Even though we have won outright in two wards (Ward 21 in Mdantsane in Buffalo City and Ward 9 at Ngquza Hill at OR Tambo Region , we are disappointed that we could not clinch Ward 18 ( Buffalo City )from the opposition. We knew very well that the ward is a DA strong hold but we are delighted with the fortitude and progress, which we will build into it towards the 2019 National elections and 2021 Local Government elections.
These results are once again a confirmation that the ANC remains the people’s movement. It is the ANC that is most suitable to lead and work together with the people of this country towards a prosperous South Africa wherein poverty, unemployment and inequality will be meaningfully addressed. We thank our communities for the show of confidence in the ANC and it’s leadership.
The ANC extends its gratitude to the volunteers, members and supporters of the movement who worked tirelessly in the build-up to these by-elections. The ANC will go back to the people and continue engaging them on the challenges they are faced with and the role, working together, we can play to realize a better life for all.
