A total of 58 beneficiaries will receive new houses after they benefitted from a government housing project to assist with disaster and help rebuild the lives of those affected in Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality on 29 November 2022. Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Siphokazi Lusithi, will hand over completed houses from the Amathole Disaster Project with a budget of R52 million.
The 58 beneficiaries form part of the 345 families who were left homeless following heavy storms in some areas of the district municipality. The project is spread over Raymond Mhlaba and Amahlathi local municipalities with a scope of building houses for 345 families. One of the families set to receive a house on the day is that of 65-year-old Mphithizeli Jeku in Cwaru village. Jeku lost his wife during the storm when their mud house collapsed while they were inside, and their son was injured.
The Department responds to disasters through its Emergency Housing Programme that aims to assist disaster hit communities.
