The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape commends the high turnout in the province during last weekend’s voter registration drive.
We led a massive registration blitz around the Province during voter registration weekend. The organization’s leadership visited taxi ranks, university campuses, churches and a number of public venues to encourage South Africans to take advantage of their hard-won right to vote.
The ANC notes that according to the IEC: there were 703794 new registrations: and of this, approximately 81% (574899) were under the age of 30.We are encouraged by the fact that we are the third Province in the country with 130 959 new registrations. In terms of the voters roll , our Province is the third most registered voters (3 365 821 or 12.6 %). Nelson Mandela Bay is the highest Region in the Province with new registrations at 14084 followed by Buffalo City at 10 113 .
That so many young South Africans are participating in the political life of their country is a rejection of simplistic and reactionary narrative of ‘disaffected youth’ being peddled by certain opposition parties. In coming out in their numbers young South Africans are reaffirming their confidence in the ballot as a tool to continue the ongoing project of socio-economic transformation towards a better life for all. Our country’s youth have heeded the call by the ANC for them to be part of this country’s future.
Registration is still open until the election date has been gazetted .
We strongly appeal to all communities who are unhappy with service delivery matters not to wait for processes like voter registration whilst there are many platforms to be explored in resolving their challenges .Our doors are open to any challenges faced by our communities for engagement.
