ANC – CHRIS HANI REGION ON ALLEGED MISCONDUCT BY DEPLOYEE

The African National Congress (ANC) leadership in the Chris Hani Region, has learnt with dismay that one of its deployees, Cde Madoda Papiyana, who is both the Regional Treasurer and Chief Whip at Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM), has on Friday, the 17th April 2020 allegedly transgressed the National Lockdown Regulations and in the process, compromised the integrity of the movement and its deployees in different structures of governance and society.

As the organisation we wish to appreciate the posture projected by Cde Papiyana to voluntary resign and view it as the act of remorse and an appreciation of the responsibilities attached to the Office of the Chief Whip. The deployee has tendered his resignation at the weekend as the Chief Whip of the CHDM with immediate effect.
ANC Regional Executive Committee (REC) has accepted his resignation following a teleconference meeting of the REC Officials convened this morning, the 19th April 2020. Cde Papiyana also expressed his deep regret to the President of the Republic, the Premier of the Eastern Cape, the Executive Mayor of CHDM and the entire people of the District.

In the meeting, the ANC REC has resolved to request the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) to institute its own internal investigation and reserve an option to subject Cde Papiyana to organizational disciplinary processes. The meeting also accepted his request to be given 3 months leave from both organizational and Municipal council work to deal with his personal challenges.

The African National Congress further calls on the relevant office in the Chris Hani District Municipality to process his resignation as a matter of urgency.

The African National Congress wishes to reiterate its stance unequivocally to support the State President’s initiative to lockdown the Republic of South Africa due to COVID-19
epidemic. We remain appreciative and acknowledge the strides and endeavours made
by our government to reduce the spread of this catastrophic disease. It is precisely for this reason that the African National Congress will continue to condemn without fear or favour any conduct which seems to be astray with COVID-19 regulations, even if such transgressions are from those held in high regard by the society.

The organisation further wishes to extend its sincerest apologies to the people of the Chris Hani region for the alleged conduct displayed by its deployee and by extension the regional leader. Importantly, as the ANC in the region, we call upon all citizens in the district to obey and observe regulations without any reservation, as this is in the best interest of the South African people. In instances where we come across law enforcement, it is our humble plea that people should cooperate with them and comply as expected.

Together we can ensure that the spread of COVID-19 is contained and minimised
through complying with the regulations promulgated by the State President.
The country is still on Lockdown until the end of April 2020
