The African National Congress (ANC) congratulates the Progressive Youth Alliance (comprising the South African Student Congress, ANC Youth League and the Young Communist League) for the landslide victory in the Student Representative Council (SRC) elections held at the University of the Witwatersrand on the 6th and 7th October 2020.
The re-election of the PYA with yet another overwhelming majority is further confirmation of the confidence that students continue to place in the leadership of the ANC-aligned student movement. Most noteworthy is that the PYA fielded ten candidates and all of them emerged victorious.
This landslide victory is sending a clear message to all South Africans that students see the PYA as their only hope to address challenges that confront them at tertiary institutions. It further demonstrates that young people see the ANC as a custodian of their hopes and aspirations.
The fact that SASCO and the whole Progressive Youth Alliance family have cemented their leadership position at this institution augers well for the future of the youth organisations that are aligned to the Congress movement.
The ANC is confident that the incoming SRC will continue to serve students with selfless dedication in keeping with the Congress culture and tradition. We applaud all students who participated in this elections and for exercising their democratic right to choose.
We wish the incoming SRC the best in the execution of its mandate.
