The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has noted, with shock and sadness, reports on the on-going taxi violence that is taking place in the Mthatha area in KSD, in Maclear and in other parts of our province. We are shocked because the MEC has been hard at work collaborating with all the associations which has culminated into the signing of the peace accord.
It is without doubt that these activities should be condemned in the strongest possible terms. We call upon the police to work around the clock to ensure that the perpetrators of this crime are speedily brought to book, and face the full might of the law. As a precautionary measure we call on authorities to temporary close the taxi ranks in order to avoid further carnage.
Such attacks on the lives of innocent citizens cannot be allowed to continue. All law enforcement agencies are, therefore requested to step up their measures to protect lives including a stronger police presence and ensure that our commuters are protected at all cost.
We call on all the role players in the transport industry to engage and assist in finding solutions to the problem of the on-going violence .
The ANC in the Province will continue to engage with the provincial government and other transport stakeholders in order to be part of a solution-based approach to prevent violence in the taxi industry and promote safe and efficient public transport in South Africa.
We send our heartfelt condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones in this carnage and wish speedy recovery to the all the hospitalised!
May Peace and Humanity Prevail !
