ANC EC CONDEMNS THE THUGGISH BEHAVIOUR OF COUNCILLOR AND STAFFER

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape noted with shock the thuggish and abhorrent behavior of an opposition councillor who is also an MMC for Safety & Security and political staffer at Nelson Mandela Bay Council who brazenly intimidated Executive Mayor, Deputy Executive Mayor and Chief Whip with two video footages circulating on social media platforms today, Tuesday, 7th June 2022 at one of eateries in Gqeberha.

These kinds of intimidation are an infringement on the councillors basic human rights to safety and security. We will recall that many individuals including two ANC councilors have been shot and killed in Nelson Mandela Bay for the past few months and any kind of threat and intimidation must not be taken lightly hence we urge law enforcement agencies to act on the individuals involved.

We encourage councilors to raise their concerns in a constructive manner, through the correct channels with municipal council in any areas of dissatisfaction and not resort to intimidation . Criminality and intimidation is unacceptable in a democratic state . It is unfortunate that these kinds of attacks are becoming somewhat of a recurring trend and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms as this kind of behaviour undermines democracy.

Nelson Mandela Bay is facing serious challenges of vandalism to public infrastructure, service delivery and water challenges with the city approaching day zero. We expect public representatives to take their work and tasks seriously.

The work of local government is the concern of every South African citizen , we therefore urge all Nelson Mandela Bay Councillors to preocuppy themselves in serving communities and leave childish and petty squabbles.

The High Court of South Africa (Eastern Cape Local Division, Gqeberha) has today given an interim interdict in favour of the applicant ( Dr Nqwazi) for the first respondent (Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality) not to enter into contractual agreement with second respondent (Adv Ngoqo) as City Manager. All councillors are expected to adhere to the court judgment and work for stability of the Municipality.

A fighting council political leadership would lead to unstable council . They would have nothing to offer in terms of service delivery because they would still be held up by bickering.

Residents of Nelson Mandela Bay deserves better services and leadership.
