ANC EC media statement following SADTU Provincial Elective Conference

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Province of the Eastern Cape, congratulates the South African Democratic Trade Unions (SADTU) for holding a successful 9th Provincial Elective Conference, in East London this past weekend from the 23rd – 25th March 2017.

The ANC further welcomes and wishes all the best the leadership elected as led by Cde Thabile Kunene, and Cde Chris Mdingi, on this huge responsibility of leading workers in the education sector.

The ANC wishes that the elected leadership will work to maintain and foster unity within SADTU, our alliance partner the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), the Revolutionary Alliance, and the entire congress movement in pursuit of the struggle to advance, deepen, and defend our shared program of the National Democratic Revolution (NDR).

SADTU in the Eastern Cape has a huge responsibility as a trade union that organises education workers responsible for building the future our province and nation. SADTU has immense responsibility to fight for the interests of their members, while at the same time working to ensure qualitative improvement of the performance of our schools in the Eastern Cape.

The ANC invites SADTU to meaningfully contribute to the policy discussions of the ANC, as preparations for the National Policy Conference, and National Congress are afoot.

The ANC hope that SADTU will assist the ANC in the province to provide solid proposals to these platforms, particularly on providing solutions for the structural challenges that continue to exist in the education sector, including those that emanate from our own weaknesses and other subjective factors.

The ANC has declared 2017 as the year of Oliver Tambo, and the year of building unity. Accordingly the ANC in the province calls on SADTU to rally behind this call, as we together celebrate the life and contribution to the liberation struggle of the longest serving president of the ANC, Cde O. R Tambo.

The ANC is pleased that the Provincial Congress closed on a progressive and revolutionary note expressed in the congress declaration. SADTU in the Eastern Cape reaffirmed its commitment to the National Democratic Revolution, and to the Tripartite Alliance that is biased to the working class and the poor.

The ANC in the Eastern Cape will work with SADTU as it has always done in the past, in defending the economic interests of the education workers, and the struggle to advance People’s education for People’s power.

The statement must be attributed to the ANC EC Secretary Oscar Lubabalo Mabuyane.
