ANC EC MOURNS THE PASSING AWAY OF DR PHUMZA DYANTYI

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has learnt with shock and sadness the passing away of former MEC of Health and ANC MP, Dr Phumza Dyantyi this afternoon after a short illness in hospital.

Dr Dyantyi became one of the first women to flee the country to join uMkhonto weSizwe in exile. She was trained as an Umkhonto Wesizwe soldier in 1978 at Novo Katengue Camp in Angola. Whilst in Angola, she worked as a nurse in the Camps. She was part of the Mighty Few Women of the Muncanda Detachment, Company 1, Platoon 2. She survived the bombardment of Novo Katengo in 1979. She was a Section Commissioner whilst in the ANC army (MK).Dr Dyantyi was trained in Cuba as a medical doctor. After completing her medical training, she was deployed by the ANC to Zimbabwe to work in that country’s public hospitals.

After the unbanning of political organizations including the ANC, Dr Phumza Dyantyi played a very critical role in the re-launching of the ANC structures inside the country. She worked at Umtata General Hospital in 1993 as a locum. She hold a Master’s in Business Administration, Diploma in Management Studies , Degree in Medicine, Diploma in Midwifery and Diploma in General Nursing.

Dr Dyantyi also served on the following Boards:

Mida Private School Nelson Mandela Museum, Ntinga Development Agency and Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS).

Not only has Dr Phumza Dyantyi distinguished herself as a disciplined cadre of the ANC, she served the movement in various capacities, having been elected to the ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), Provincial Secretary of the ANC Veterans League in the Eastern Cape, MKMVA NEC, ANC Health Subcommittee Convener and ANC Women’s League.

Dr Phumza Dyantyi served diligently in various positions including Mayor of Mbhashe Local Municipality and later deployed to the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature as an MPL. She was appointed MEC for Health in the Eastern Cape on 23 May 2014. She was appointed again as MEC of Social Development in May 2018 until June 2019. At the time of her passing, Dr Dyantyi was serving in the Portfolio Committee of Health in Parliament.

Dr Dyantyi served our Congress Movement with unwavering commitment and absolute dedication. We lower our revolutionary banners in honour of this incomparable stalwart and gallant fighter of our liberation movement.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dyantyi family, relatives, friends, colleagues in the National Assembly on losing a longstanding dedicated member, ANC Veterans League and MKMVA on the loss of this outstanding stalwart of our liberation movement.
