The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape sends message of condolences to the Potgieter family on the passing away of Prof Flip Potgieter who passed away on Sunday (25th November 2018) after a short illness.
Cde Flip Potgieter is a former UPE Maths Lecturer and political activist who was part of the End Conscription Campaign in the late 80’s and later Eastern Province Cricket Board President.
As a cricket administrator and later ANC municipal councillor during the Transitional Local Authority (PE TLC),Cde Potgieter made it his task to build bridges between previously antagonistic camps as South Africa moved towards democracy. His readiness to go all the way in the process was unusual for his generation of white administrators.
Cde Flip Potgieter’death leaves a huge gap in the pantheon of academics with a deep sense of loyalty and dedication to the liberation of our country and continent from oppression, injustice and exploitation.
Flip embraced the cause of human freedom without regard for the possible consequences to himself and his family. He out-rightly rejected the racial privilege that many chose to enjoy in the face of a crime against humanity.
We mourn Flip’s passing, and will not forget his quiet, humble courage.
We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Potgieter Family during this time of bereavement.
May his soul rest in peace!
