ANC STATEMENT ON THE OUTCOME OF THE SPECIAL NEC MEETING

The African National Congress (ANC) convened a special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday, 20 May 2019 in Cape Town.

NATIONAL AND PROVINCIAL ELECTIONS

The NEC received a preliminary report on the recent election campaign. The NEC believes that the elections were free and fair, and gave expression to the democratic will of the people.

A detailed report and analysis will be presented and discussed at the next NEC engagement.

PRESIDING OFFICERS: NATIONAL ASSEMBLY (NA) AND NATIONAL COUNCIL OF PROVINCES (NCOP)

The NEC resolved to deploy the following cadres in the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces respectively:

National Assembly (NA)

· Thandi Modise – Speaker of the National Assembly (NA)

· Lechesa Tsenoli – Deputy Speaker

· Nomvula Mokonyane – Chair of Chairs

· Pemmy Majodina – Chief Whip

· Dorris Dlakude – Deputy Chief Whip

National Council of Provinces (NCOP)

· Amos Masondo – Chairperson

· Sylvia Lucas – Deputy Chairperson

· Seiso Joel Mohai – Chief Whip and Chair of Caucus

NORTH WEST PREMIER AND LEADER OF OPPOSITION IN WESTER CAPE

The Special NEC agreed that Job Mokgoro should remain as Premier of the North West. Accordingly, Job Mokgoro will be the ANC Premier-Elect for the NW Province.

The leader of Opposition in the Western Cape will be Cameroon Dugmore.

RENEWING A CAPABLE AND DEVELOPMENTAL STATE

The Special NEC reaffirmed its commitment to build a developmental state that is capable of improving the lives of millions of our people. Few countries in the world have succeeded in expanding vital services such as water, electricity, roads and housing to so many people in such a short time. Accordingly, the special NEC reiterated its support for a reconfigured executive to improve effective governance, efficiency, service delivery and inclusive growth.

NEC LEKGOTLA

The ANC will host the NEC Lekgotla on 31 May – 3 June 2019.

CONCLUSION

The Special NEC also noted and welcomed the return of its National Spokesperson who has already hit the ground running
