The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Eastern Cape welcomes the steps undertaken by the African National Congress (ANC) Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) in relation to its leaders facing charges of corruption and serious crimes. The decision to set aside the comrades is in the best interest of the individual comrades involved and the movement at large.
It is our considered view that the decision is the necessary step towards the implementation of the renewal of both our movement and our country through action rather than words. Therefore, the SACP once more takes this opportunity to emphasise the importance of organisational renewal and unity of the ANC and all our organisations.
We wish to reaffirm our long held view that although there is a genuine expectation that implicated comrades should as revolutionaries act in a manner that preserves both their integrity and that of the movement guided by revolutionary consciousness. For the organisational consistency, the implementation of this important decision should not only be left to implicated comrades alone to exercise their revolutionary conscience, the organisation must also take the lead to ensure consistency.
The renewal of the ANC as the true representative of the people is an important step that ought to be undertaken in a consistent manner. The renewal of our organisations will go a long way in reconnecting our movement with society. To us the SACP, the organisational renewal and unity of the ANC is very critical especially when our people are facing the challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality that has been worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic. A renewed and unified ANC is the only basis for providing principled leadership to the alliance and society as a whole.
