ANC EC ON FLOODS AFFECTING GQEBERHA & KARIEGA AREAS

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has noted the unprecedented destruction of infrastructure and disruption of economic activity, communications, logistics networks and social services – giving rise to serious humanitarian challenges, especially in Kariega and Gqeberha . Basic services such as water, electricity and sanitation have been disrupted for the past 48 hours after floods wrecked havoc in the Nelson Mandela Bay.

The affected areas are the following : Dongweni , Mavuso Road, Mase Steet, Meke Street,Boxer in Njoli, Veeplaas, Nkanini, Cleary Park, Enkanini, Kiwane, Sharpville and Masakhane , Motherwell , Steve Tshwete Village, Khayelitsha, Shukushukuma, Nomakanjani, Young Park Informal Settlement (NU8), Vukani, Mjondolo, Ikamvelihle, Northern Areas of Misssionvale, Qunu, Vaastrap and Riemvasmaak ad at Kariega : Laapland, Jubilee Park (Die Gaat) and Dr. Braun.

Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, Members of the Executive Council ( Provincial Cabinet)and Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPL’s) visited flood-stricken communities and assured residents that all spheres of government will assist communities in rescue and recovery efforts.

We welcome the wealth of material and social support extended to affected communities by various sectors of society including Gift of the Givers , Non-governmental organizations working with provincial and local government to provide relief recovery.

We commend the outpouring of solidarity and the spirit of Ubuntu demonstrated by South Africans across the Metro who have donated food, water, clothes and other necessities to the people of the affected areas. We send our condolences to family that have lost their loved one who got fatal electrical injury whilst seeking shelter from the flood.

The ANC calls on the public to be extra vigilant and exercise caution, especially in areas prone to flooding and also follow the regular updates and warning messages from the South African Weather Services.
