FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The African National Congress (ANC) Provincial Working Committee (PWC) in the Eastern Cape welcomes the crime fighting efforts across the Province .
The Province has witnessed the arrests of dangerous criminals since the deployment of the well trained and skilled units of the South African Police Service (SAPS) tasked with high value target operations as well as medium and high-risk policing operations, the elite crime fighting machinery in the form of the Tactical Response Team (TRT), Tracking Teams (TT) , Special Investigators , Detectives , Hawks and the National Intervention Unit (NIU) . We welcome the successes that have been registered in arrests of people involved in serious crime and early this morning the breakthrough with the arrests of the four(4) suspects behind the Lusikisiki Massacre at Port Shepstone.
The work of the SAPS has, through intelligence led operations , covert operations and weekly high density operations, resulted in the arrest of many criminals, especially dangerous and hardened criminals around Mthatha, Ngqeleni, Qumbu, Tsolo, Qoboqobo, Gqeberha , East London , Dutywa , Ngqamakwe and many parts of our province. PWC is of the view that crime intelligence information remains central in the take-down of armed and ruthless gangs. Crime Intelligence operators with the work of informants and units within the SAPS must continue to clamp down on organized crimes linked to kidnapping, extortion, killings and insurance related murders .
The ANC is particularly pleased that in bringing this team of highly skilled men and women, the Minister of Police, Cde Senzo Mchunu has mandated their focus on decisively dealing with the rampant extortion , killings , robberies, drug related crimes , hijackings , cash in transit robberies and all incidents of violent crime directed to the people of our Province
This decisive action, demonstrating absolute intolerance of crime, gives practical meaning to the ANC’s stated commitment to eradicate the scourge of crime in all its manifestations. The ANC PWC calls on society to work with these crime fighting teams and all agencies of law enforcement to root out crime in our communities.
We also call on society at large to lead the charge, within our legal framework, against the destabilizing effects of shielding criminals within our communities and our homes. This would also include reporting to the authorities drug peddlers and other criminals, South African and otherwise, living within our communities. Crime is a societal problem, affecting the entire nation regardless of class, race and geographic footprint; it remains incumbent upon us all to support the work of these teams and the SAPS in general.
The law enforcement agencies should spare no effort and without fear or favour, ensure that they apprehend, charge and convict those criminal elements within our midst who continue to terrorize our communities but also making a strong call on our government to implement stricter gun laws and harsher sentences.
SUNDAY TIMES ARTICLE ON RAMAPHOSA’S ANC SUCCESSOR:
The ANC PWC has noted with contempt attempts to revive the tired
blatant falsehoods, deceits, relentless misinformation and unbridled malicious campaign to vilify and resort to slander leaders for political machinations.
A report published in Sunday Times 13 October 2024 edition titled ” Battle lines being drawn for Ramaphosa’s ANC successor” attributed to a first casualty of an engine room alliance as Cde Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane .We reject attempts by wedge-drivers, found both within and outside our own organisation and the media, whose sole intention is to sow divisions among leaders and members of the ANC. These are malicious attempts to drive a wedge among leaders and members of the ANC. Our movement has a duty and responsibility to defend its unity and the integrity of its leadership and its processes against malicious and baseless attacks.
The leadership collective elected at the ANC Eastern Cape 9th Provincial Conference at ICC in May 2022 is united on the programme of unity and renewal. Any attempts by agents provocateurs to divide our leaders will be fiercely opposed. The ANC in the Province calls on all its leaders and members to distance themselves from this divisive campaign and to work tirelessly for unity within the ranks of the organisation.
